An Experimental Study on Accuracy of Pulse Rates Counted for Fifteen, Thirty and Sixty Seconds

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine whether a normal or rapid heart rate, the length of the counting interval, or use of the right or left wrist affected the accuracy of pulse counts. An experimental design was used. Thirty subjects parti-cipated in this study, counting the radial pulse of healthy -adolescents for 15, 30 and 60 seconds at normal and rapid rates. This experiment was conducted from June 20 through June 25, 1983.
Under the 3 hypotheses designed for this study, the results obtained were as follow; 1) Based on the findings of this study it would appear that there is accuracy advantage to be gained by counting the pulse for the longer intervals of 30 and 60 seconds.
2) Methods other than radial palpation may be indicated, particularly in the deter-mination of the rapid heart rate.
3) There vas no significant difference of the accuracy of the pulse rates by palpation of the right or left wrist.
